Rice cake & peanut butter

This is a delightful breakfast or snack. A co-worker gave me the experience the other day and I have since stocked up on rice cakes.

One Quaker rice cake (lightly salted) = 35 calories

One tablespoon of Jif all natural, low sodium peanut butter = 95 calories

Total= 130 calories (I say, make it a double!)

Try adding some raisins or something else on top to make it a little more interesting.

Food tracking / application integration awesomeness

I have mentioned in past posts that for food tracking, I use Spark People. I am still technically a sparker – I track my measurements and weight progress in there. My history is with spark people and until there is a way to migrate information from SP to somewhere else, I reckon spark people owns my ass. However, I have begun using My Fitness Pal to track food.

Its just about the same as spark people. The difference is the technology. My fitness pal (MFP), bless their little hearts, has made it so information from other applications can be utilized within MFP. Example: Endomondo is my fitness tracker. It’s also one of the apps compatible with MFP. Soooo, this means that when I go for my morning walk, the information from the Endomondo applications is automatically sent to MFP and my calories are adjusted to fit the calories burned during my morning walk! Friggin’ amazing and exciting if you ask me. It’s a pain in the ass to plug in all of your food as it is, and then to have to manually enter your exercises is just more than I have ever bothered to do. With this Endomondo/MFP integration, it does it for me. Magfrickenificent!

For whatever reason, the Endomondo app totally over estimates my calories burned but I can mentally adjust it in my head. Oh and in addition to my fitness app being connected to my food tracking app, Endomondo is also connected to earndit – each minute of activity is worth points which accrue so you can buy stuff.

Amazing technology. I’m so loving it.

Music choices for pace

Lets see if this works. I am going to try to share my morning mix with you. http://www.fitradio.com/ogmix/839 I think you have to log into fit radio to hear it.

Anyhow… this mix took me from walking mid 14 minute miles to (depending on my stride) 13 minute miles. From time to time, I like to go through the mixes on fitradio.com and add some new ones to my favorites. Then, from my phone I can pick what I want in the morning. I tend to stick with whatever one makes me go fastest until I get totally sick of the songs.

I absolutely cannot imagine walking without music. Not just any ole’  music; pace setting music. The best thing that happened to me during my weight-loss adventure was my damn smart phone. Since March, my pace has gone from 16-17 minutes to 13 & 14 minutes. I blame it on the Fit Radio app. Back in the old days (before March 2012) I used my mp3 player for music.  That was great and kept me interested but it became a pain in the ass to try and keep any sort of constant pace. The beats just aren’t the same when they’re switching from  (for example) Living After Midnight by Judas Priest, to Dancing Queen by Abba to Poker Face by Lady Gaga…etc…

Seriously… if you’re going to spend any amount of time out there walking…get friggin’ fit radio. You might not know or even like half the songs in the mixes but they are pretty damn consistent in the beats per minute. The above link to my morning mix is over an hour long. I’ve not even heard the last songs on it.

Aerobics <–LoL

Brrrrr…

It had to come eventually I suppose – freezing temperatures that is.  I sort of like the crisp cold air; especially when doing the power walking thing. It was about 26 degrees this morning.  It’s really cold at first but then as your body gets crankin’, ya start to warm up. By the time I was finished today, my head was sweating but not like mid summer sweat. Then, once back home the mad chills begin as the sweat does its job. I grab a big dry sweatshirt, a cup of coffee, a warm laptop and wait for the chill to subside. So far, the day is going fabulously… it’s only 7:30 in the morning, I hope it lasts.

So… here is a little video of “Nordic Walking”. I think we should start a Nordic walking movement this winter.

Have a great day beasties

Who-s-the-man

Fancy pants power walker

So we’ve returned to standard time. Thank God. My body knows it’s coming and starts acting like it well before we actually change the clocks. For the last month, I’ve been getting tired later and wanted to sleep in. Last night, I went to bed at 10:00 and slept until 5:00. I awoke bright eyed and bushy tailed and got dressed for my morning walk…though I don’t think I can call it that anymore.

I’ve turned into one of those people I used to make fun of. The “power walker.”

I smashed my personal best this morning. My first mile was 13:10! If anyone was watching me out their windows, they would have seen me do this little happy flailing jig when the voice on my Endomondo app informed me of my lap time. I believe it was also accompanied by a not so loud, “WooHoo” but I could be mistaken. =)

I remember seeing those flailing power walking freaks out and about and me saying, “What the hell?” Right up until the last couple weeks even. I’ve discovered that the more I flail, the faster I go. It’s not an uncontrolled flailing. It’s well… Ok… you know the natural things your hands and arms do when you are jogging? They sort of curl up. People don’t normally run with their arms swinging to the sides…elbows are bent, fists are clenched but not like you’re gonna punch someone – more like dancing clenched. lol (if that makes any sense). Well, my power walking flail is sort of like the jogging arm/hand position but they swing back further. Hmm… lets see if I can find a video of someone doing what I’m trying to explain.

(10 minutes has passed)

Yep. That’s the ticket. LoLoL My arms are a  little looser than this fella’s demonstration because I am totally out for speed. I’m way more flailier then them. There is also the music factor. Sometimes, I even toss in a snap…I must look pretty ridiculous sometimes I would imagine. I should have someone video tape me. I’ll be hard pressed to find someone who wants to come out with me at O:darkThirty in the morning though.

Even though I’m having trouble with food this week, I should be able to not gain anymore weight if I keep up this exercise routine. With a little luck, I might even lose a pound or two.

So my little wilderbeests, get out there and walk-walk-walk!

=)

Daily Exercise Log

I’ve abandoned endomondo for the time being.  The calories burned was for whatever reason, waaay to much. When I first started using the program it was pretty accurate but all of a sudden it started to almost double my calories burned. SO, now I’m on to RunKeeper – the calories burned are much more logical. I wish it integrated with myfitnesspal like endomondo does, but it’s no big deal to add the calories burned manually.

I’ll keep this post here for reference for a while.

Yet another mechanism for keeping me honest. FYI…if you suddenly see that Mary Croteau has walked 30 miles in 15 minutes, or something weird like that… call someone cuz I’ve likely been thrown into the back of a van and kidnapped. LoL (yes, a van…all evil-doings happen in vans)

Life is not all hats and horns

…and neither is this weight-loss mission.

I’ve gained my stupid pounds back – the ones that I keep dancing with over and over again. It’s not like I don’t understand why I am gaining weight. What I don’t understand is how ‘that thing’ that makes people gung-ho about accomplishing something works. I’m certain that it’s a part of the brain that breaks down. It’s the same part that causes procrastination. There needs to be a study on this. I feel like I’m starting all over again. Intellectually, I know that I’ve lost a ridiculous amount of weight and that a 4-5 pound fluctuation isn’t the end of the world and that I know I can take it off again just as quickly as it appeared but today, it feels like the end of the world.

I put this out there, not to solicit sympathy but to just share that this shit happens and I suppose, it’s what you make of it. I don’t want to gain back all the weight that I’ve lost. More importantly, I don’t want to lose all that I’ve gained as far as fitness. Is it enough to smack me back into gung ho mode? Beats the hell out of me. The term, “One day at a time” applies here.

=) Have a nice day.

Bad ideas and more lessons learned

Talk about screwing up a good thing. I totally wasted this month with my ‘plan’ to only do the c25k program. What an idiot. So basically, I’ve been gaining and losing this pesky 4 pounds all month and I’m pretty sure it’s because my exercise routine is shot to shit. I have to get back on track so I went out walking today. The ONLY thing I can say that I got out of my 4 weeks of c25k is that my walking time has somehow improved exponentially. Before this round of c25k I was walking 15 minute miles. Today, mile 1 was 13:38, mile 2 was 14:53 and mile 3 was 14:25.  I jogged the remaining .21 miles home.  I’m going to go out again tomorrow. It’s yet to be decided if I plan to continue the c25K program. What ever I decide, it must must involve getting back to the routine of going out every single morning come hell or high water.

I want to, at a minimum, lose 100 pounds by my birthday. March 12th. Ideally, I’d like to be down to my goal weight by then but I’d SETTLE for the 100 pounds. After that, I’d only have 22 pounds left to get to my goal. My goal weight is NOT the recommended weight for my height. It’s 189 pounds. about 15 more than the maximum recommendation. I don’t care about that. I think 189 sounds like a lovely number to weigh. That’s what I’m shooting for. This feat cannot be accomplished doing what I did this month. What a friggin’ waste of a perfectly good month.

48 pounds to go. (give and take those pesky 4 pounds lol)

Weighing in (morning rituals)

People say (whoever those people are) you should only weigh yourself once a week. I say phooey! I weigh myself daily…sometimes out of curiosity, multiple times. I think its fascinating how much weight we gain during the day. Sometimes at night, I weigh as much as 5 pounds more than I did in the morning! Sometimes, I weigh myself twice in the morning. Once, right after the giant morning pee. I will strip buck naked and hop on the scale. Sometimes, if I take a substantial crap, I’ll document the weight after that. LoL Why should I factor in yesterdays food waste into a new day? Gross. I know. It can be a pound though so uhhh…. every pound counts, yano what I mean? =) I reckon some people might get disappointed if they weigh themselves every day so I suppose it’s not for everyone, but I like to know where I’m at before I plan my food for the day.

I like it when I find stuff on the interwebs that validate my strange ideas. Water is heavy. 16 ounces of water equals a pound. How many glasses of water a day are we supposed to drink? LoL We pee it all right back out though…it’s not like it sticks. According to the following article, if you have a giant dinner, the weight might still be on you if you weigh yourself before “you go”. LOL
